Your child will learn lots at school and as a parent we are sure you would like to support their learning at home.

EYFS

The children in Reception enjoy consolidating their maths and literacy skills by playing games on the computer. Here are some links to some of our favourite educational websites.

www.topmarks.co.uk – a range of maths and literacy games

www.letters-and-sounds.com – games for each Phonic phase

www.mathszone.co.uk – lots of maths games

http://www.focusonphonics.co.uk/sound.htm - website that demonstrates the correct pronunciation of letter sounds

Phonics: Learning to read and write fluently are vital skills for children. The children in Reception begin by learning the letter sounds using the Jolly Phonics scheme, supported by the Letters and Sound document. Please click here for more information about Jolly Phonics.

Handwriting: By learning to form letter correctly early on, it helps children to develop their writing skills and prepares them for the handwriting system that they will use in Year 1 and 2. The children in Reception learn to write the letters, with the correct formation, alongside learning their sounds. We use the ‘Read, Write Inc.’ scheme, which introduces the children to the shape of the letters with visual cues and an associated phrase. Please click here for more information regarding read Write Letter Formation and here for Read Write Phrases.

Reading: Once the children in Reception have learnt the first few sets of sounds, they will begin to bring reading books home. At St John’s the children learn to read by enjoying a variety of books, including the Oxford Reading Tree stories. It is vital that the children consolidate their skills by reading at home every day. Please click on the links  for more information about how to help your child with reading.Helping Your Child With Reading  and Games to Encourage Reading.

Keywords: Alongside phonics, the children in Reception are taught to recognise some high frequency words by sight. These are words that the children will come across regularly when reading. They include some decodable words and tricky words. A decodable word can be read by saying the sounds, then blending those sounds together to form the word. A tricky word is a word which cannot be sounded out. They need to be able to recognise these words by sight and spell them correctly. The children in Reception bring home keyword boxes, to practise their small set of words every day. Please click here for a list of the High Frequency words.
